Database managers are computer programs that directly access the data files Wintix uses. Not only can you produce reports with Wintix, but it is also serves as an industry-standard database manager. Among the database programs that can access Wintix files are: dBase and Visual dBase, Paradox, Foxpro, Access, PC File, Alpha 4 and 5, FileMakerPro and Open Office.
Spreadsheets like Open Office, Calc and Excel will import the files, but are not able to write to them without destroying the file. Therefore, you should only use spreadsheets on files that you have created (by sending a report to a dbf file). Suggestion: install MS Query when you install Excel. This is a very handy way of creating all kinds of reports and mailing lists. Word processors import the files for mail merges.
Open Office has a complete query and report generator. Open Office has matured into an impressive suite of programs. And, it’s free. Go to Open Office for more information, downloads and add-ons.
Using any of these programs is not for inexperienced people or dilettantes. You can do real damage. Even so, the programs are so useful that many of our customers use them a lot. Check a college catalog and look for a course in basic database management. You will be well rewarded for your efforts.
